Welcome to the wiki. The idea here is to have a ton of planets that exist separately from each other, but with an overarching society that either directly connects them or watches over some of the less advanced societies. One major idea I want to explore is that as sentient species reach the end of technological progress, it starts to move into research and development into pure magic. People have been accidentally doing random magic for a long time, humans and other species, and upon reaching the end of technological development the world of magic becomes more clear. There are groups of people who have been doing magic either secretly or to a small degree and the Collective is seeking them out now to try and learn their secrets. The Collective are not the bad guys in my world, simply the arbiters of knowledge across species.
